Arriving in London was intimidating. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and hectic. With only a suitcase and Google Maps at my disposal, I felt disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t stress. Here’s how to arrange your life in London before starting at Imperial, allowing you to fully enjoy your new city adventure.

Whether you come weeks in advance or just prior to term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodations

Steer clear of expensive hotels by booking accommodation early. I was lucky, but not everyone gets that chance. The prime options disappear quickly! Try to find housing close to your campus or on a reliable Tube line to keep long commutes to a minimum for early classes.

Key Life Administration

Once you’re in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

  • Money transfers – International students seek economical ways to send money. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide good exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Connectivity is vital for navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after you land.
  • Bank account – Some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and friendly for students. Open an account for routine transactions and part-time job wages.
  • Student ID card – This enables access to campus buildings, libraries, and discounts for students. Retrieve it as soon as you can.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time for meeting flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you are introverted, challenge yourself to take part. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Navigate London Wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading to me walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable transport on the Tube and buses. Walking remains a wonderful way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Discover Your Go-To Places

London can be overwhelming. Having a comforting spot is beneficial – mine is a park nearby. I go there daily to unwind. The O2, only 10 minutes from my home, is another favorite for movies and relaxation. Find your own preferred places, whether a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and reflect.

Discover the City

Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and home. Identify local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your favorite dining or coffee spots. Check out iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for a view. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a little!

Concluding Advice for Starting at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag – Retailers commonly charge for disposable ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas fail in strong wind.
  • Join unconventional events – They can lead to great stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – It’s completely normal at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
