Stepping into London for the first time was a surreal experience. The city appeared vast, bustling, and frenetic. With only a suitcase and Google Maps at hand, I felt lost on where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to panic. Here’s how to kickstart your new life in London before your time at Imperial, so you can fully enjoy the city.
Whether you’re arriving early or just in time for the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
Secure a place to stay
Steer clear of costly hotel bills by organizing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best options are snatched up quickly! Aim for a location near your campus or an efficient Tube line to minimize long travels for early morning classes.
Essential administrative tasks
Address these key tasks soon after your arrival in London:
- Money transfers – as an international student, seek a dependable and cost-effective method to send money from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one promptly for data access and navigation in an unfamiliar city.
- Bank account – though some banks may require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. An account is necessary for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID card – vital for gaining campus access, utilizing the library, and accessing student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
The significance of the first week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial is vital. It’s the period when you’ll meet roommates, peers, and lifelong friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if shyness holds you back, challenge yourself to join in. I made lasting friendships during campus tours and at society stalls. The first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Navigate London wisely
In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover the city and stumble upon hidden treasures.
Locate your comfort zones
London can be intense, especially at first. Having a reassuring place is beneficial – mine is a local park where I unwind. My second favorite spot is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I enjoy movies weekly. Identify your own places, like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and find solace.
Discover the city
Become acquainted with the frequently visited areas around campus and your home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred food or coffee venues. Tour famous landmarks, check out free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus for the scenery. Some of your cherished experiences will arise from wandering a bit off course!
Final thoughts before starting at Imperial
- Secure a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t reliable in strong winds.
- Participate in unusual events – they can lead to great anecdotes.
- Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences this at first.
You don’t need to have everything sorted by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was at the start of my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure, one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
