**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I set out on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had always been somewhat shy and introspective, stepping into the unfamiliar was well outside my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and a good deal of enjoyment, I see just how much this journey has transformed me. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forging friendships. If you’re a new student contemplating this, you might experience similar nerves. On my inaugural day in student housing, merely days before classes commenced, I confined myself to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I’m pleased to announce that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life—connections that truly feel like family.
What shifted? It began with small actions, like engaging in light conversation with others who were just as new and apprehensive as I was. I learned that taking a bold step early can make a significant difference. If you don’t feel ready at once, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to bond with others. Most crucially, I discovered that being authentic is the most effective strategy. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’ll undoubtedly find others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Acclimating to the intensity and challenges of university-level coursework was yet another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I witnessed others seemingly thriving. It’s easy to feel inadequate, but one reassuring thought that helped me was realizing that everyone grapples with similar issues. If you’re finding something challenging, there’s a good chance others are experiencing it too.
The most important lesson I took away was the importance of asking for assistance. Whether from your classmates or the faculty, seeking help is vital. Don’t hesitate to reach out—collaboration and communication are essential for navigating academic obstacles.
### Fostering Connections with Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty within the Materials department has been remarkable. They genuinely wish for students to succeed and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept open channels of communication, addressing our queries and offering direction. Although I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into it sooner.
At the outset of the year, I made a bold move by taking on the role of year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues for connecting with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My greatest takeaway? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have an excess of help.
### Insights Gained and Future Prospects
As I contemplate my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I experienced before and during university were unwarranted. With the extensive range of support options—both from staff and fellow students—there’s always assistance available when needed. This year has imparted the lesson that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to manage the pressure from exams and deadlines alongside moments of enjoyment and happiness.
Looking ahead, I’m eager to continue evolving, learning, and fully embracing my journey at Imperial. For anyone about to embark on their own university adventure, rest assured that it’s natural to feel apprehensive—but also remember that you have the strength to conquer those fears and flourish in this exciting new chapter of your life.
