**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, plunging into this new phase was quite daunting. As I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous joyful experiences. But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current status?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, a few days before the term started, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently claim that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had.

These connections didn’t happen immediately, but rather started with little steps—like initiating conversations with individuals who were equally new and uncertain. Gradually, these bonds flourished into what now resembles a second family. My main takeaway? Don’t hesitate to reach out early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are bound to encounter individuals who connect with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic expectations of university proved to be another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level material was evident, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when surrounded by high achievers.

What assisted me in managing these episodes of self-doubt was realizing that I was not alone. Everyone was experiencing similar feelings, and likely, if I didn’t grasp a concept, others were struggling as well. The essential thing was to seek assistance—whether from colleagues or educators. Learning to ask for help became one of the most invaluable skills I acquired during my first year.

### Guidance from Faculty

The faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly want students to thrive and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing issues and extending support.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Early on, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative, a position that helped me forge connections with faculty members. This proved to be a beneficial experience, simplifying the process of seeking advice and assistance. My suggestion? Utilize the resources and support offered—you can never have too much help.

### Major Lessons

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while balancing it with moments of joy and achievement.

To any future students reading this: embrace the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and remember that assistance is always available. University is a phase for development, and with the right outlook, it can be one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life.
