First arriving in London was quite an intense experience. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and full of energy. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I wasn’t sure where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here are some tips to help you adjust to London before embarking on your journey at Imperial, enabling you to savor your new city adventure.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the semester starts, here’s what I wish I had known upon my first arrival.

Secure housing

Book your accommodation early to steer clear of costly hotel nights. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime choices disappear fast, so strive for a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.

Administrative tasks: organizing key needs

Once you’re in London, tackle these critical tasks:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, seek an economical way to send money. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – acquire one right away for data and navigation in your new neighborhood.
  • Bank account – some banks demand a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – crucial for gaining campus access, borrowing from the library, and snagging student discounts. Obtain it at your earliest convenience.

Significance of your initial week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time when you’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re feeling shy, challenge yourself to engage. I forged strong friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

At first, I struggled to grasp the Tube and bus system, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was memorable yet chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures throughout the city.

Discover your personal havens

London can be emotionally taxing. Identify a personal refuge, like a park, café, or bookstore, where you can unwind and recharge. My favorites include a local park and the O2 for movies. These spots help cultivate a sense of calm in the bustling city.

Discover the city

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Pinpoint your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus to enjoy the sights. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from spontaneous explorations.

Essential advice for starting at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag – stores impose charges for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas prove ineffective in gusty weather.
  • Participate in unique events – they frequently lead to great stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal at the outset.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
