Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to handle. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If this is about to be your experience, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling into London life before your time at Imperial begins, ensuring you can appreciate the city.

Whether you arrive several weeks in advance or right before classes commence, here’s the guidance I wish had been given to me.

Secure your accommodation

Arrange your housing as soon as possible to steer clear of pricey hotel stays. I was lucky, but not everyone will be. The best options vanish swiftly, so strive to locate a place nearby your campus or a dependable Tube route to avoid lengthy commutes.

Administrative tasks: necessities

When you arrive, tend to these necessities:

  • Money transfers – as an overseas student, find a trustworthy method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – acquire one right away for data and navigation in a new locale.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Set up one for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and student deals. Get it as soon as you can.

Your initial week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is essential. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to join in. I connected with close friends during campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel smart

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, ending up walking nine kilometers across London. Avoid this by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking is still a fantastic way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your go-to spots

London can be daunting, particularly at the start. Having a comforting location is beneficial. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for films. Identify your own favorite places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside seat, to unwind and recharge.

Discover the city

Get to know the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Explore local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eateries. Visit notable sites, complimentary museums, and relish unplanned strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from wandering a bit off course.

Essential advice for life as an Imperial student

  • Carry a reusable bag to circumvent fees for single-use ones.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket since umbrellas aren’t efficient in windy conditions.
  • Join unusual events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented at first; it’s a common feeling.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
