Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to handle. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt adrift. If you are about to undergo this, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before you commence at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban lifestyle.
Whether you journey here weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here is the guidance I wished I had received.
Secure accommodation
Steer clear of expensive hotels by organizing your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is. Opt for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes to morning classes.
Administrative tasks: critical aspects to tackle
Upon your arrival in London, promptly take care of these key tasks:
- Money transfers – as an international student, find an economical method to receive funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – navigating a new place is challenging without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan as soon as possible.
- Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payment receipts.
- Student ID card – this allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it without delay.
The significance of your initial week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time when you will meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and organizations. Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to engage; I found close friends through campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers throughout London. It was a noteworthy experience but chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for affordable travel. Walking remains a terrific way to uncover hidden treasures within the city.
Identify your comfort zones
London can be emotionally intense. Having a comforting place is beneficial. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for films. Discover your own retreats, like a cafe or bookstore, to unwind and recharge.
Discover the city
Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries. Explore renowned landmarks, complimentary museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus. Many of your fondest memories will emerge from unplanned explorations.
Essential pointers before commencing at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective in blustery weather.
- Engage in unique events – they become excellent stories.
- Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s typical at the outset.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you are reading this, you’re already ahead of where I began. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
