Stepping into London for the first time was quite daunting. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and fast-moving. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you’re preparing for this experience, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to acclimate yourself to London before your journey begins at Imperial, allowing you to fully enjoy the city.

No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to term, here’s the guidance I wish was shared with me.

Top priority: find accommodation

Prevent expensive hotel bills by organizing your accommodation early. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune. The best choices tend to vanish quickly. Aim to find a place near your campus or a convenient Tube line to minimize long commutes for your early classes.

Administrative tasks: key necessities

When you get to London, tackle these important tasks without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy, economical method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – ensure you have access to data for navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after arriving.
  • Setting up a bank account – some banks request a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are expedient and favorable for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job income.
  • Student ID card – this gives you access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Obtain it as swiftly as you can.

Significance of the initial week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time you meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and join those that catch your interest.

Even if you tend to be reserved, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I formed strong friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your initial week establishes the atmosphere for your university life.

Travel wisely in London

At first, I didn’t grasp the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable but chaotic experience. Sidestep this by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for lower-cost Tube and bus rides.

Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your favorite spots

London can feel emotionally intense, especially at the beginning. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a local park where I unwind daily. Another haven is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly.

Discover your own comforting locations, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside seat. These areas are essential for unwinding and recharging.

Discover the city

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll visit often around your campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite food or coffee venues.

Explore notable landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your finest memories will arise from spontaneous explorations.

Final recommendations before starting at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use bags.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are often useless in windy weather.
  • Participate in unusual events – they lead to great stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel confused – it’s typical during the initial period.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
