**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unknown was not a familiar experience for my previously shy and introverted self. Reflecting back now, I recognize an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Challenge of Making Friends
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. Starting university can feel overwhelming, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share those concerns. On my very first day in student accommodation, just before classes commenced, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.
Fast forward to now, and I can assuredly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. My coursemates and classmates have become akin to a second family for me. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
What did I take away from this? Taking that initial step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t stress—there will be plenty of social events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with those who have similar interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Challenge
Another significant hurdle was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or to question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving peers.
What aided me during this time was the understanding that everyone else was navigating similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were as well. The central lesson here? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year—whether it’s seeking help from fellow students or reaching out to faculty.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
On the topic of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and tutors truly wish for their students to flourish and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They promote open lines of communication throughout the year, addressing our issues and offering support.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available to me until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. At the year’s onset, I courageously became a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to forge relationships with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support and resources at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained
Overall, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely unfounded. With the extensive support provided by both faculty and fellow students, I came to realize that I was never truly alone. I’ve learned how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also making time for enjoyment, and I’ve grown in ways I never expected.
For anyone gearing up to begin their university experience: embrace the challenges, take those courageous steps forward, and remember that assistance is always close at hand.
