Stepping into London for the first time, the city felt vast, noisy, rapid, and slightly daunting. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar boat, don’t fret. Here are some tips to aid you in adjusting to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, ensuring you relish the excitement of being new in the city.

Whether you’re arriving weeks ahead or just before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure housing

Steer clear of expensive hotels by organizing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the best choices disappear quickly. Try to locate a place close to your campus or a trustworthy Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early morning classes.

Life logistics: organizing the essential items

Once you’re in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, find a dependable and cost-effective method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – crucial for data and navigation in an unfamiliar place. Acquire one as soon as possible.
  • Bank account – some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and favorable for students. Open an account for daily transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – essential for entering campus buildings, libraries, and availing student discounts. Obtain it at your earliest convenience.

Your first week at Imperial is pivotal

Your inaugural week at Imperial is key for your student journey. It’s the time when you’ll connect with flatmates, fellow students, and prospective friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in what catches your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your first week lays the foundation for your university experience.

Exploring London: travel wisely

In my first week, I struggled with the Tube and bus system, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to save on Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains a fantastic method to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your favorite spots

London can seem overwhelming, particularly at first. Having a favorite place helps – mine is a nearby park where I unwind. Another is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I enjoy weekly movie outings.

Discover your own spots, such as a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.

And remember to discover!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you visit frequently near campus and home. Find your local supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and cherished spots for meals or coffee.

Tour iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your fondest memories will stem from a little wandering!

Final advice before diving into life as an Imperial student

  • Utilize a reusable bag – stores typically charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective in windy weather.
  • Attend unique events – they’ll make for engaging stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s entirely normal at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
