Stepping into London for the first time was an awe-inspiring experience. The city felt vast, vibrant, and bustling. Equipped only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you face a similar scenario, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to help you transition into your London life before beginning at Imperial, so you can relish the journey of being new in the city.

Whether you show up a few weeks in advance or just prior to the term’s commencement, here’s the advice I wish someone had given me upon my arrival.

First things first: secure a place to stay

It’s wise to arrange your accommodation early to steer clear of costly hotel expenses. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the prime choices get snatched up quickly. Strive to locate housing near your campus or close to a dependable Tube line to prevent long commutes for early morning classes.

Life admin: organizing the essential necessities

Once you’re in London, address the following matters promptly:

  • Money transfers – being an international student, locate a reliable and cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain a UK SIM card and data plan right away to prevent getting lost without navigation in an unfamiliar area.
  • Bank account – while some banks necessitate a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for regular transactions and any potential part-time employment.
  • Student ID card – this card allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to get it as soon as you can.

The initial week at Imperial is key

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in activities that catch your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I did and made some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society events. Your first week establishes the tone for your university adventure.

Moving around London: travel smart

In my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was memorable yet hectic. Secure your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your favorite spots

London can be emotionally intense, particularly at the start. Having a go-to spot is beneficial – mine is a nearby park I visit daily for some peace. Another favorite is the O2, just a 10-minute distance, where I enjoy films weekly to relax.

Identify your own comfort locations, be it a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These areas are essential for unwinding and recharging.

And don’t forget to explore!

Get familiar with the areas you frequent near your campus and residence. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for scenic views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will come from those moments spent getting a bit lost!

Final suggestions before you immerse into Imperial student life

  • Bring a reusable bag – many shops charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective in windy weather.
  • Participate in unique events – they lead to great stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s common at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when starting at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and kick off your London narrative one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
