Stepping foot in London for the very first time was an astonishing experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this, don’t be concerned. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adapting to your new life in London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.

Whether you’re arriving a few weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Arrange your housing early to circumvent costly hotel bills. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. The best properties get taken swiftly! Aim for a location close to your campus or an efficient Tube line – attending early lectures can be challenging if you’re more than an hour away.

Life administration: managing the essentials

Once you’re in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – having mobile data is vital for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.
  • Bank account – some banks need a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time employment payments.
  • Student ID card – it’s essential for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and enjoying student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Your initial week at Imperial is critical

Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that catch your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest pals during campus tours and society stalls. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Traversing London: travel wisely

During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – avoid doing this. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cheaper Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains an excellent way to soak in the city and its culture. London is filled with hidden treasures you’ll reveal through your explorations.

Discover your comforting places

London can be emotionally intense, especially in the beginning. Having a comforting spot is beneficial – mine is a local park. I stop by daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, just a 10-minute distance, where I catch movies weekly.

Identify your own comforting venues, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These spaces are more helpful than you might anticipate.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your residence. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.

Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the view, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a little lost!

Final pointers before immersing yourself in Imperial student life

  • Get a reusable bag – supermarkets and stores usually charge for single-use ones.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t keep you dry when the wind blows.
  • Accept invitations to the more ‘unusual’ events – they yield the best stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel somewhat lost – everyone experiences this at the start.

You don’t need to have it all figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial – so take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure.
