Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to handle. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to ease your transition into London life prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new city experience.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks ahead or right before the term starts, here’s what I wish I had known when I arrived.
Secure Your Accommodation
Steer clear of expensive hotels by arranging your lodging early. I was lucky, but that isn’t the case for everyone. The desirable options disappear swiftly! Try to find a place close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to prevent lengthy travel times for morning lectures.
Key Administrative Tasks
After you arrive in London, address these key tasks:
- Money transfers – as an international student, identify a trustworthy and affordable method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one swiftly to remain connected without data issues in an unfamiliar location.
- Bank account – while some banks demand a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. Create an account for day-to-day transactions and earnings from part-time work.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as quickly as you can.
Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your initial week is essential for your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and prospective friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you are introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I made good friends during campus tours and society stalls. This week lays the foundation for your university experience.
Travel Wisely in London
During my first week, I strolled nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and bus routes. It was a memorable yet tumultuous experience. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking is also a fantastic method to navigate the city and find hidden gems.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can be quite emotionally intense. A go-to location for comfort is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another preferred spot for movies and relaxing. Discover your own favorite spaces, be it a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, for relaxation and resetting.
Discover!
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to eateries or coffee shops. Check out notable landmarks, wander through free museums, and relish the views from a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from those moments of getting a bit lost!
Final Advice
- Carry a reusable bag – shops impose charges for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t reliable against the wind.
- Join unusual events – they yield great stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences this initially.
You don’t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you are already ahead of where I was when I arrived at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
