Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London before launching your journey at Imperial, ensuring you get the most out of your new urban life.
Whether you’re getting here early or right before the term commences, this is the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.
First things first: secure a residence
Arrange your accommodation well in advance to steer clear of pricey hotel stays. I was lucky, but that isn’t the case for everyone. The most desirable options go quickly, so strive to find housing close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize long journeys for morning lectures.
Administrative tasks: managing the essential items
Once you reach London, tackle these essentials without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, locate a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Applications like Wise or Revolut can assist with favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one right away for data and navigation in your new surroundings.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus, utilizing the library, and benefiting from student discounts. Pick it up as soon as you can.
The initial week at Imperial is crucial
Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for shaping your student journey. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Engage in Welcome Week and discover over 350 student-led clubs and organizations. Even if you’re a bit reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
In my first week, I walked nine kilometers around London because I wasn’t familiar with the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. However, walking remains an excellent way to discover the city and its hidden treasures.
Locate your comfort zones
London can feel emotionally intense, especially in the beginning. Having a cozy spot is beneficial. Mine is a nearby park where I go daily to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another location where I relax weekly by catching a movie. Identify your own comfort zones, like a cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to help you de-stress and rejuvenate.
And make sure to explore!
Get to know the areas around your campus and residence. Find local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops. Visit iconic landmarks, dive into free museums, and enjoy rides on the red double-decker buses. Some of your finest memories will arise from wandering off the beaten path!
Final hints before diving into student life at Imperial
- Grab a reusable bag – shops usually charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas fail in strong winds.
- Be open to unusual events – they often lead to fantastic stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s entirely normal at the onset.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco run at a time.
