Arriving in London for the first time felt intimidating. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before beginning at Imperial, enabling you to embrace your new urban lifestyle.

Whether you land weeks in advance or just before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I had been given.

Secure Your Accommodation

Prevent expensive hotel stays by arranging your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Ideally, find a place close to campus or near a dependable Tube line to reduce lengthy travel times for early classes.

Key Administrative Tasks

Upon your arrival, make sure to manage these key tasks:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy and economical method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.
  • UK SIM card – secure one right away for data usage and navigation.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and accommodating for students. Establish one for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – critical for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Ensure you collect it promptly.

The Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital. Connect with your flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you have a shy disposition, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society stalls. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Navigate London Efficiently

In the beginning, I struggled with the Tube and buses, which led me to walk nine kilometers. Avoid this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to lower travel expenses. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures.

Establish Your Go-To Places

London can feel overwhelming at times. Identify a comforting place, like a nearby park, to recharge. My second favorite spot is the O2, where I relax with a film. Find your own locations, whether it’s a coffee shop, a bookstore, or a riverside bench.

Discover the City

Get to know the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Identify local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred dining spots. Visit iconic sites, explore museums, and enjoy impromptu strolls. Some of your cherished memories will stem from getting a little off track.

Additional Tips for Life at Imperial

  • Use a reusable bag to avoid paying for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas don’t perform well in windy conditions.
  • Attend unique events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s common at the start.

You don’t have to have all the answers from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
