Upon my arrival in London for the first time, I was overwhelmed by its scale. The city came across as loud, fast-moving, and somewhat intimidating. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about where to start. If you’re on the brink of this experience, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before commencing at Imperial, so you can fully enjoy your new urban life.

Whether you land weeks ahead of time or just before classes start, here’s what I wish I had been aware of upon my initial arrival.

First and foremost: secure accommodation

Prevent expensive hotel expenses by organizing your lodging well in advance. I was lucky, but many are not, as the best accommodations fill up fast. Seek a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line – lengthy commutes aren’t ideal for early morning lectures.

Administrative tasks: managing the essentials

Upon reaching London, address these matters swiftly:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, discover an economical method to move money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigation in a new city. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.
  • Bank account – some financial institutions need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – this enables access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as promptly as possible.

Your initial week at Imperial is critical

Your inaugural week at Imperial is essential for your student experience. It’s when you’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society fairs. Your first week lays the foundation for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I struggled to navigate the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – don’t replicate that. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent way to discover the city and its culture. You’ll find hidden treasures just by exploring.

Establish your comfort zones

London can feel overwhelming initially. Having a comforting location is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I relax. Another is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I enjoy movies weekly to unwind.

Identify your own relaxation spots, like a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge. It’s more advantageous than you realize.

And don’t forget to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the frequently visited areas around campus and your residence. Pinpoint your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee establishments.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from a little bit of getting lost!

Final recommendations before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life

  • Utilize a reusable bag – stores typically charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective against strong winds.
  • Participate in unique events – they provide excellent stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences this at first.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start weaving your London narrative one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
