Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city seemed enormous, noisy, and incredibly fast. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt a bit disoriented. If you’re about to embark on this adventure, don’t stress. Here’s how to acclimatize to London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to fully enjoy your new urban life.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before classes start, here’s the advice I wish had been shared with me.

Secure Your Accommodation First

To sidestep pricey hotel expenses, make sure to arrange your accommodation well beforehand. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune. Opt for a location close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Important Life Admin

As soon as you settle in London, take care of these vital tasks quickly:

  • Money transfers – As an international student, seek a budget-friendly method for transferring funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide superior rates.
  • UK SIM card – Obtain one right away to ensure you have data and navigation in your new environment.
  • Bank account – Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and suitable for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.
  • Student ID card – This provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it at your earliest convenience.

Maximize Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged strong friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This first week lays the groundwork for your university journey.

Navigate London Wisely

At first, I was confused by the Tube and buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. Avoid making the same error. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel more affordably. That said, walking remains a fantastic way to explore and uncover unique treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be intense. Having a go-to comfort zone is beneficial. My sanctuary is a local park where I relax daily. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another favorite of mine for films and leisure. Discover your own havens, be it a cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, where you can unwind and recharge.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Explore notable landmarks, free museums, and enjoy impromptu city strolls. Some of your fondest memories will arise from being a little lost.

Final Suggestions for Kicking Off at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are inadequate in gusty weather.
  • Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t panic if you feel disoriented initially; it’s completely natural.

You don’t need to have everything planned out from the get-go. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I began. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
