Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and full of activity. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before beginning at Imperial, so you can savor your new urban life.
Whether you’re arriving beforehand or right before the term kicks off, here’s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.
Secure Your Accommodation
Ensure your housing is sorted out early to prevent costly hotel stays. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Try to find a place close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.
Essential Life Admin
Once you’re in London, take care of these necessities:
- Money Transfers: As an international student, find a dependable method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
- UK SIM Card: Obtain one right away for internet access and navigation.
- Bank Account: Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer quick setup and are student-friendly. You will need an account for transactions and receiving payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID Card: This provides access to campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it swiftly.
Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week is vital for connecting with flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led organizations and societies. Even if you’re introverted, try to engage. I forged strong friendships during campus tours and society meetings. This week establishes the mood for your university journey.
Smart Travel in London
At first, I didn’t grasp the Tube or buses and ended up traversing nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains a fantastic way to explore and uncover little treasures.
Discover Your Relaxation Spots
London can feel daunting, so locate a comforting place. Mine is a local park where I retreat daily to unwind. The O2, merely a 10-minute walk away, is another spot I enjoy for some downtime with a film. Seek out your own havens—a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench—where you can recharge.
Get to Know the City
Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Identify local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to dining venues. Explore iconic sites, free museums, and relish spontaneous strolls around the city. Some of your most cherished memories will be made when you wander a bit off course.
Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for disposable ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t practical in gusty weather.
- Join in on unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented at first; it’s all part of the process.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already doing better than I was. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
