Arriving in London was initially a daunting experience due to its vastness and rapid pace. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t fret. Here are some tips to assist you in settling into London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new city life.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks earlier or just right before the semester starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had been given upon my arrival.
First things first: secure accommodation
Arrange your housing early to sidestep expensive hotel costs. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the top choices get taken quickly. Strive for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early morning lectures.
Life admin: organizing essential tasks
Upon your arrival in London, immediately tackle these essentials:
- Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut offer superior exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one right away for data and navigation in an unfamiliar area.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling provide fast and student-friendly services. Open an account for your everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Pick it up as soon as you can.
Your first week at Imperial matters most
Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal for your student experience. It’s when you’ll meet new flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies that align with your interests.
Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to join in. I forged some of my closest friendships during random campus tours and society booths. Your first week will shape your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
<pDuring my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was chaotic but unforgettable – don’t follow my lead. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains the finest way to soak in the city and its culture. You’ll stumble upon hidden treasures while exploring on foot.
Identify your comfort zones
London can initially feel emotionally overwhelming. Having a comforting location helps – mine is a local park I visit daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch movies weekly.
Discover your own comforting spots, whether a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These places where you can decompress and recharge are invaluable.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with the frequently visited areas around your campus and home. Locate your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and beloved food or coffee venues.
Discover iconic landmarks and spend your weekends exploring the city. Visit free museums, enjoy a ride on a double-decker bus for the view, and wander without a set plan. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from getting a little lost!
Final thoughts before diving into Imperial student life
- Carry a reusable bag – shops often charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well against wind.
- Take part in unique events – they create wonderful stories.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences that at first.
You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
