Stepping into London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to be anxious. Here’s some tips to ease your transition into London before you commence your studies at Imperial, enabling you to fully savor your new city life.

No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term begins, here’s the advice I wish I had received.

Secure Your Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel stays by organizing your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the top choices fill up fast. Try to find a place located close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent long commutes for early lectures.

Important Essentials to Take Care Of

When you reach London, make sure to handle these essentials without delay:

  • Money Transfers – International students require an economical option to move money from their home country. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM Card – Make sure you have data for navigation by acquiring a UK SIM card right away.
  • Bank Account – While some banks may ask for a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and cater well to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID Card – This is vital for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and receiving student discounts. Obtain it as soon as feasible.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is significant for your student experience. It’s the time when you will connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join the ones that pique your interest.

Even if you feel reserved, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I formed strong friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel

At first, I found the Tube and buses puzzling and ended up walking nine kilometers across the city. It was an unforgettable experience but quite hectic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains a fantastic way to discover the city’s unique treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel emotionally intense, especially at the start. Having a favorite place to retreat to is helpful. For me, it’s a local park that I visit daily to unwind. The O2, just a ten-minute walk away, is another go-to spot for catching a movie and relaxing.

Discover your own comfort zones, like a café, bookstore, or riverbank bench, to chill and recharge.

Discover the City

Get accustomed to the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee haunts.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most treasured moments will arise from impromptu outings.

Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag to eliminate charges for single-use bags.
  • Consider purchasing a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can’t stand up to the wind.
  • Join in on unusual events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t stress if you feel a bit lost initially; it’s completely normal.

You don’t have to have it all sorted out on the first day. If you’re delving into this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, get your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one step at a time.
