Upon my initial arrival in London, I was struck by the city’s vastness, clamor, and rhythm. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps as my guide, I felt lost about where to start. If you are about to face a similar situation, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.
Whether you land weeks ahead or right before the semester, here’s the counsel I wish I had been offered upon my arrival.
First and foremost: secure accommodation
Prevent expensive hotel bills by booking your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as prime locations fill up rapidly. Seek lodgings close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.
Administrative essentials: handling the necessary tasks
Once you arrive in London, promptly take care of these vital necessities:
- Money transfers – as an overseas student, locate a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is essential for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and a data plan soon after your arrival.
- Setting up a bank account – certain banks may require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick setups and are student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – imperative for accessing university facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.
The initial week at Imperial is key
Your initial week at Imperial is vital for shaping your student experience. It’s the time you connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you feel timid, challenge yourself to join in. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society events. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Navigating London: intelligent travel
In my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my blunder by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for affordable travel.
Walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures.
Identify your comfort spots
London can be emotionally intense, especially at first. A comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I visit daily to relax and recharge. My second favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy films weekly.
Discover your own comfort zones, be it a cafe, bookstore, or bench by the river. These areas may assist you more than you anticipate.
And remember to discover!
Familiarize yourself with the frequently visited locales around campus and your residence. Locate your local supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from the occasional detour!
Final recommendations before you dive into Imperial student life
- Acquire a reusable bag – stores typically charge for disposable ones.
- Invest in a waterproof coat – umbrellas don’t hold up well against wind.
- Embrace unconventional events – they make for fantastic stories.
- Don’t be anxious if you feel lost – everyone does at the start.
There’s no need to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
