Upon arriving in London for the first time, the city felt massive, noisy, fast-paced, and somewhat intimidating. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was bewildered. If you are about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to London prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.
Whether you’re getting here early or just before the term begins, here’s the counsel I wish I had received when I arrived.
Secure Your Living Arrangement
Arrange your housing in advance to prevent costly hotel expenses. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best living options vanish swiftly. Try to find a place close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes to morning classes.
Important Life Admin
As soon as you arrive, tackle these necessities:
- Money transfers – International students require affordable methods for transferring funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Acquire one as soon as possible for data and navigation in your new setting.
- Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer swift and student-friendly services. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time work payments.
- Student ID card – Crucial for accessing campus facilities, utilizing the library, and obtaining student discounts. Get it at your earliest convenience.
Your Initial Week at Imperial
The first week is vital. You’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Involve yourself in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, endeavor to participate. I forged close friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Navigating London Smartly
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced fare travel. Walking remains an excellent method to discover and admire hidden treasures.
Establish Comfort Zones
London can be quite overwhelming. Identify a comforting locale, such as a park, café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge. My go-to places are a nearby park and the O2 for movie outings.
Discover the City
Acquaint yourself with the surroundings of both your campus and residence. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and dining spots. Explore notable landmarks, free museums, and enjoy impromptu strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from wandering a bit off course.
Final Recommendations
- Utilize a reusable bag to evade fees for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas tend to fail in gusty conditions.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Do not fret about feeling disoriented; it’s perfectly normal at first.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you are reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
