Stepping into London for the first time was overwhelming. The city felt vast, noisy, frenetic, and somewhat intimidating. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was disoriented. If you’re about to face this, don’t stress. Here are some tips to help you adjust to your new life in London before beginning at Imperial, ensuring you make the most of your time in the city.
Whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.
First Thing: Secure Your Housing
Avoid expensive hotel fees by organizing your accommodation early. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the best options fill up fast. Try to stay close to campus or near a dependable Tube line for those early morning journeys.
Key Administrative Tasks
As soon as you arrive in London, tackle these essentials quickly:
- Money transfers – As an international scholar, discover a trustworthy and budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Navigating a new city is challenging without data. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after arrival.
- Bank account – Some banks need a UK address, but digital options like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is essential for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and enjoying student discounts. Collect it as soon as you can.
Your First Week at Imperial is Important
Your initial week at Imperial is crucial for your student experience. It’s the time when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and possible friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that interest you.
Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and I made some of my closest friends during spontaneous campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Travel Wisely Around London
During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable but hectic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to save money on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city’s culture and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover Your Favorite Spots
London can be emotionally intense, particularly at first. Having a comforting spot can help – mine is a park nearby where I go daily to unwind. Another is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I relax with a movie every week.
Identify your own places, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and reset.
Explore the City
Get to know frequently visited areas around your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite food or coffee hangouts.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the scenery, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most memorable moments will stem from getting a bit lost!
Final Advice Before Beginning at Imperial
- Bring a reusable bag – stores commonly charge for single-use ones.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective against wind.
- Join unusual events – they create great stories.
- Don’t worry if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal at the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything figured out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I arrived at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
