Stepping into London for the first time was breathtaking. The city felt enormous, noisy, and full of energy. With only a suitcase and Google Maps as my guide, I wasn’t certain where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to stress. Here’s my guidance to help you acclimate to London before your time at Imperial begins, enabling you to embrace your new city life.
No matter if you arrive weeks ahead or just in time for classes, here’s the guidance that I wish I had received upon landing.
Secure your living arrangements
Steer clear of expensive hotel costs by arranging accommodation early. I was lucky, but not everyone has that privilege, as the best places get booked fast. Aim for a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes for those early lectures.
Important life administration
<pUpon arriving, focus on these priorities:
- Fund transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one promptly to avoid being without data for navigation in an unfamiliar city.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Create an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – vital for entering campus buildings, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.
The significance of your inaugural week at Imperial
Your first week is vital for shaping your student experience. It’s when you connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and get involved in activities that captivate you.
Even if you feel bashful, make an effort to take part. I forged some of my closest friendships during random campus tours and society gatherings. The atmosphere of your first week influences your entire university experience.
Navigating London smartly
During my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. Prevent this by acquiring your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs.
Walking remains a fantastic way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your favorite spots
London can be intimidating, especially at the start. Having a comforting location is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I retreat daily to unwind. The O2 is another beloved spot where I relax with a movie.
Seek out your own comforting venues, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to de-stress and recharge.
Discover the city!
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations.
Visit iconic landmarks, check out free museums, and soak in the views from a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will come from wandering a bit off course!
Final suggestions before commencing at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for disposable ones.
- Get a waterproof jacket – umbrellas offer little defense against wind.
- Join quirky events – they create great narratives.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – this is natural at the beginning.
There’s no need to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I entered Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
