**Insights from My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed by nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment, I can assertively affirm that it’s been a life-altering experience. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was the task of making friends. For many incoming students, this is a primary concern, and I was no different. On my initial day moving into my residence, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some wonderful friendships.

These connections didn’t happen instantly; they began with small initiatives—such as striking up casual conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as I was. Gradually, these acquaintances evolved into what feels like a second family here at Imperial. My most significant lesson? Take that initial leap of faith without hesitation. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. And most importantly, just be authentic. With such a diverse student body, you will undoubtedly encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic demands and workload of university was yet another significant challenge. There was a clear increase in complexity compared to A-levels, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more strenuous. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving peers.

What assisted me in navigating this transition was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with understanding a concept, it’s likely that others are facing the same issue. The secret lies in seeking help—whether from your classmates or instructors. Learning to request support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### Support from the Materials Division

Speaking of support, the faculty within the Materials department has been outstanding. They truly desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us, addressing our worries and offering direction.

Though I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early on, I took the initiative by becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated connections with staff members. This turned out to be an invaluable experience. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best things you can do for your own benefit. My recommendation? Utilize the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve discovered that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and connection.

Ultimately, the university experience is equally about personal development as it is about academics. It’s about stepping beyond your comfort zone, embracing challenges, and carving out your niche within a new community. For me, this inaugural year has merely been the commencement of an exhilarating journey.
