Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to take this plunge, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before commencing your journey at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new urban life.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just right before the term kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had received.

Top Priority: Find Accommodation

Avoid pricey hotel expenses by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that advantage. The most sought-after options disappear quickly, so target a place close to your campus or an accessible Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Crucial Life Admin

As soon as you arrive in London, tackle these essential tasks immediately:

  • Money transfers – International students require a dependable and cost-effective method to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Having data is vital for finding your way around a new city. Acquire a UK SIM card with data soon after you land.
  • Setting up a bank account – Some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.
  • Student ID card – This is key for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Grab it as soon as you can.

Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital for your experience as a student. It’s an opportunity to meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week activities, check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies, and register for what intrigues you.

Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society meetings. Your initial week will shape your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience, but not advisable. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains a fantastic way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing. Having a comfort zone assists – mine is a local park where I go to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, where I enjoy movies weekly to relax.

Discover your own spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench, where you can recharge and refresh.

Discover the City

Familiarize yourself with areas you will frequently visit around campus and home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations.

Explore renowned landmarks, visit free museums, ride a double-decker bus for a scenic view, and wander without a fixed itinerary. Some of your best experiences will stem from a little bit of aimless wandering!

Last-Minute Tips Before You Start at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag – Shops frequently charge for disposable ones.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas often fall short against windy conditions.
  • Join unique events – They create memorable stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel misplaced – It’s a normal feeling at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
