By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing

Stepping into London for the first time was staggering. The city felt immense, noisy, and full of energy. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to start. If you are about to experience this, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London prior to beginning at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.

Whether you arrive early or just as the semester begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had gotten.

Secure Your Accommodation

Prevent expensive hotel costs by arranging housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy travels for early classes.

Managing Essentials

As soon as you arrive, promptly tackle these necessities:

  • Money transfers – For those from abroad, services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Vital for data and navigation in an unfamiliar city.
  • Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students.
  • Student ID card – Provides access to campus amenities and student discounts.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is essential for meeting flatmates, peers, and prospective friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies.

Even if you are introverted, make an effort to participate. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week lays the foundation for your university experience.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel

At first, I covered nine kilometers across London due to struggles with public transit. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card for cheaper travel.

Walking remains a wonderful way to uncover hidden wonders in the city.

Identify Your Go-To Spots

London can feel daunting. Locate a comforting area, like a park or cafe, to unwind and recharge.

Discover the City

Get to know local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and restaurants. Explore iconic landmarks, museums, and take unplanned strolls to craft unforgettable memories.

Final Recommendations Before Starting at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag to prevent fees for single-use varieties.
  • Consider investing in a waterproof jacket for blustery, rainy days.
  • Participate in unique events for noteworthy stories.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented at first; it’s completely normal.

You don’t have to have everything figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure.
