My arrival in London was initially quite daunting. The metropolis appeared immense, boisterous, and relentless. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a comparable position, there’s no need to fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London before beginning your journey at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new city experience.
Regardless of whether you get here weeks in advance or right before the semester, here’s the guidance I wished I had received upon my arrival.
First things first: secure accommodation
Book your lodging in advance to sidestep costly hotel expenses. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Prime options disappear quickly, so try to find a location near your campus or an efficient Tube line to prevent lengthy travels to early morning classes.
Managing essentials: handling necessary administration
Upon arriving in London, focus on the following essentials:
- Money transfers – as an international student, discover a reliable method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one promptly for data access and navigation in a new setting.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time work deposits.
- Student ID card – crucial for campus entry, library usage, and receiving student discounts. Be sure to collect it without delay.
The initial week at Imperial is pivotal
Your inaugural week at Imperial is significant for your overall student experience. Connect with flatmates, fellow students, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that spark your interest.
Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to join in. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and at society booths. This first week lays the foundation for your university adventure.
Navigating London: travel wisely
During my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to uncertainties with the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable yet frantic experience. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains a fantastic way to experience the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures.
Identify your comforting places
London can feel emotionally intense, particularly at the beginning. Discover a comforting location, such as a nearby park or a preferred hangout like a café or bookstore. These areas assist in helping you unwind and recharge.
And don’t skip the exploration!
Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding both your campus and home. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred food or coffee spots.
Tour iconic landmarks, check out free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and stroll around without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from moments of getting slightly lost!
Final insights before you dive into Imperial student life
- Grab a reusable bag – retailers frequently charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are often ineffective against strong winds.
- Accept invitations to unusual events – they often lead to incredible stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at the outset.
You don’t have to have all the answers on your first day. If you’re going through this guide, you’re already ahead of where I was when I embarked on my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.
