**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was set to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into the vibrant life of university felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of substantial personal development, challenges, and numerous joyful experiences. But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. The start of university can be quite overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the term’s official commencement, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. These relationships have become my second family at Imperial, and all it took was stepping out of my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with individuals who were equally unsure.

What did I discover? Taking that initial plunge at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re feeling unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t stress—there will be ample ice-breaking activities and chances to engage with others. Above all, I learned to be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Challenges

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and complexity of the course materials. The leap from A-levels to university was distinct, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and assume they have it all under control.

What assisted me during those tough moments was the awareness that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely others are too. The critical takeaway is to reach out for help—whether from classmates or faculty members. This is perhaps the most vital insight I gained in my first year: don’t hesitate to seek assistance.

### Encouragement from the Materials Department

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering department are remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are sympathetic to the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and were always ready to address our issues.

While I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One significant step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and pursuing those can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems accessible to you—you can never receive too much help!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that much of the apprehension I felt before and during university was often unfounded. With a wide array of support options available—from faculty to peers—there’s always someone ready to assist. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance enjoying myself while managing the inevitable stress of examinations and deadlines.

As I get ready to transition into my second year, I am thankful for the growth, friendships, and wisdom that my first year has afforded me. To anyone preparing to begin their own university adventure: take the leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You can do this!
