**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and doubt about the path ahead. I was preparing to begin my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I can appreciate how life-changing this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before the semester officially started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
These relationships didn’t materialize instantly; they grew from small beginnings—like engaging in light conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as I was. Over time, these relationships developed into a second family here at Imperial. My most significant lesson? Take that courageous step early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be ample ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. And most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse student body at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable obstacle was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened difficulty of the coursework. There was a distinct leap from A-levels to university, and the transition from the first term to the second proved to be even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when you observe others seemingly thriving.
What benefitted me the most was the understanding that I wasn’t isolated in this challenge. Everyone was in similar circumstances, and if I struggled with something, it’s likely that others did too. The crucial factor was learning to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This straightforward action of reaching out made a significant impact and is, in my view, the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Supportive Materials Division
On the subject of faculty, I cannot stress enough how exceptional the Materials department is. The educators and staff genuinely wish for students to excel and are compassionate towards the difficulties we encounter. They maintain open communication throughout the year and are always ready to lend a hand.
Even though I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I regret not utilizing it sooner. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me forge rapport with faculty members. This was an invaluable experience, and I wholeheartedly advise seeking ways to connect with your lecturers and tutors. My suggestion? Make use of the support systems at your disposal—there’s no such thing as excessive help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the array of support resources accessible, both from staff and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to balance the stress of examinations and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and happiness, and I’ve experienced significant personal growth.
So, to anyone on the verge of commencing their university journey: face the challenges head-on, take those courageous leaps, and remember that support is always available. You can do this!
