Recently, I completed nine months of residing in London. Although this isn’t a lengthy period, I’ve gained considerable knowledge. London is a vibrant metropolis, not only due to its diverse housing choices but also its rich mix of communities. Students have a plethora of options available. Both student residences and private housing offer amenities such as ensuite and suite bathrooms, shared and private rooms, studio flats, and house shares. Local students can easily organize apartment viewings, while platforms like Rightmove, Zoopla, or SpareRoom enable international students to explore potential housing online, featuring the amenities and proximity to public transport options.
During my quest for accommodation, I aimed to rent a room in Central London for easy access to major landmarks, social hotspots, and Imperial’s campus. The city is organized into six concentric zones, with the first two being the most central. London boasts an efficient transport system, including the underground (tube), buses, and trains, which simplifies navigation and travel between zones. I sought to minimize travel expenses as inter-zonal fares can reach up to £5.25 daily. I opted to walk shorter distances rather than using a bus or tube. However, oyster card schemes have made commuting to university more economical. Additionally, London Overground and National Rail services reach areas outside the Underground network, extending into zones beyond central London. Costs for inter-zone travel on these services fluctuate based on distance and each train company’s fare structure. The high living costs in Central London, driven by its major attractions, can be daunting. Thankfully, I was attending university with a friend, and we opted to share a room, greatly reducing our rent. I favored intercollegiate student accommodations, aiming to connect with students from diverse backgrounds and a similar age group, a combination harder to find in private rentals.
Being close to grocery stores was essential for me. Popular supermarkets include Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op, along with more budget-friendly options like Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland. Being near key stores such as supermarkets and pharmacies aids in saving time on errands, particularly during exam periods.
Selecting a neighborhood is a challenging task. London’s ethnic communities are a crucial aspect of its cultural landscape, providing a rich array of diverse neighborhoods. Many international students in London look for familiarity with their home country. Southall in West London is home to a significant South Asian community featuring Indian restaurants, grocery stores, and traditional clothing shops. Brixton in South London is recognized for its Afro-Caribbean community and lively music culture. Chinatown, located in the heart of London’s West End, is a bustling area with various Chinese dining options, shops, and cultural events. These are just a few instances of community-oriented neighborhoods.
The optimal areas to reside in London depend on your individual interests and requirements. When searching for new accommodation in London, embrace the variety and richness of its housing options, explore cultural enclaves, and relish the convenience and vibrancy of this extraordinary city.
