Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I now recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what has this year imparted to me, and where do I stand now?
One of the earliest and most formidable challenges was forging friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting aspects of initiating university life, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it could be one of your foremost worries. On the first day of moving into my dorm, a few days ahead of the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Sitting here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with conversing with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean from this? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a plunge at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody anything, be genuine. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in several ways, an even bigger transition from the first semester to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone navigates the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly guarantee there are others who also find it perplexing. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be one of the most crucial lessons to learn in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding toward students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did indeed take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become familiar with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are ample opportunities to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best investments you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university life is to capitalize on the assistance you’re offered. You can never receive too much!
Ultimately, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the numerous support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
