**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was poised to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had previously been quite shy and introverted, jumping directly into this new phase was definitely out of my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect upon an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a good deal of happiness, I find myself contemplating what I’ve gained and how much I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may feel similarly. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too frightened to venture out and make introductions. Fast forward to today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.
At Imperial and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same journey. What did I take away from this? Taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease right away, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most significantly, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was acclimating to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re lagging behind.
What aided me during these times was the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same situation. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether it be from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning how to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill to acquire in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and tutors genuinely wish for students to thrive and are fully aware of the difficulties we encounter. They show empathy towards us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the academic year.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had done so earlier. Early in the year, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative, which helped me cultivate relationships with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. There are many avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can create a significant impact. My main takeaway here is to utilize the support systems available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Discoveries Made
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was often unfounded. Thanks to the extensive support from faculty and fellow students, those feelings can be managed and overcome. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoyment with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I progress, I am thankful for the challenges, development, and friendships that have characterized my first year. To anyone poised to start their university adventure: take that leap, ask for assistance, and fully engage in the experience—you won’t regret it.
