**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had typically been quiet and withdrawn, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. However, reflecting on an academic year rich in development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, the experience has proven to be truly transformative. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was the quest for friendship. Beginning university can be overwhelming, and if you’re a future student perusing this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family. It simply took a bit of casual conversation with others who were feeling just as I was.

The most significant takeaway? Embrace that initial leap during the start of the year. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. And most crucially, just be your authentic self. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Managing the Academic Shift

Another crucial hurdle was acclimatizing to the workload and the increased rigor of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and moving from the first term to the second felt even more challenging. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe your peers studying and wonder if you’re measuring up.

What aided me in overcoming those moments of self-doubt was the acknowledgment that everyone is encountering similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are, others are as well. The secret is to seek help—whether from fellow students or the faculty. This is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Support

Regarding staff, I can’t stress enough how remarkable the Materials department is. The lecturers and support staff genuinely desire for you to thrive and are sympathetic to the challenges faced by students. They maintain open communication throughout the year, addressing any concerns we may have.

I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support offered until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative early in the journey enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary lesson? Utilize the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

This year has demonstrated to me that the apprehension I felt—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support available from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to manage stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness, and I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated.

To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure: embrace the challenges, take those bold steps, and remember that assistance is always close at hand.
