**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and numerous joyful moments. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of my university experience was the task of making friends. For many new students, this can be one of the most intimidating elements of university life. On my first day in student accommodation, merely days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, feeling too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast-forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve met here—both in my program and across campus—have evolved into a second family for me. It merely required me to step outside of my comfort zone and initiate small conversations with others who were feeling similarly.

So, what did I take away from this? I realized that making an effort at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not fully ready or at ease, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that being authentic is crucial. With such a wide array of students, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more daunting. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in such an atmosphere, especially when observing others studying and beginning to question your own capabilities.

What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, others likely are too. The most constructive action you can take is to seek assistance—be it from your classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help is possibly the most vital skill to cultivate during your initial year.

### The Encouraging Materials Department

On the topic of assistance, the staff within the Materials department have been remarkable. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and understand the obstacles we face. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our inquiries and providing support.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral care until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. At the year’s start, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This experience enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which ended up being extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway is to take full advantage of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much support!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was often unnecessary. With the extensive array of support options from staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I learned how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment, and I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated.

To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: take the plunge, embrace the hurdles, and don’t hesitate to ask for support. You will find your niche, just as I have.
