**Thoughts on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unfamiliar was a formidable challenge. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the prospect of forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s probably a concern on your mind as well. On my first day moving into my accommodation—just a few days prior to the official start of term—I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I’m happy to say I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become like a second family to me, all beginning with light conversation and common experiences. What I’ve realized is that taking that first step to connect with others is essential. If you’re not comfortable or ready initially, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others.
Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic demands and the intricacies of the coursework was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your skills when surrounded by accomplished classmates.
What aided me was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The vital takeaway is to ask for assistance—whether from your classmates or teaching staff. Learning to seek support is perhaps the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Guidance from the Staff
The faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us, addressing our worries and offering support.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to build connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable.
There are various ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support structures available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was mostly baseless. With the extensive range of support options from both staff and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone.
Most importantly, I’ve learned how to navigate the demands of exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of joy and enjoyment. It’s been a year of personal transformation, and I’m eager to discover what the next chapter has in store.
