**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar was a formidable challenge. As I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time rich with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered when starting university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might resonate with the same worry. On my first day in the student residence, just days before the term officially commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve met here have become my extended family, both within my course and throughout the university. It all began with small interactions—engaging in light conversation with others who were equally new and apprehensive.
What did I gain from this experience? First, it’s worthwhile to take that initial leap of faith. Even if you’re not completely ready or comfortable right off the bat, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with peers will come your way. Second, the most valuable thing you can do is to be yourself. With a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find people who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the subject material. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first to the second term felt particularly tough. It can be easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, mainly when witnessing others seeming to juggle everything effortlessly.
What helped me significantly was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same experience. If something doesn’t click for you, it’s likely that others share that sentiment. The essential thing is to reach out for assistance—whether from your classmates or your professors. Learning to seek help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your initial year.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty within the Materials department is outstanding. They truly want students to thrive and are fully aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept lines of communication open and displayed understanding towards our challenges.
Though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources available until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. At the start, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to foster connections with faculty members. This experience proved invaluable, and I strongly encourage seeking to know the staff in your department. They are there for your benefit, and you can never have an excess of support.
### Essential Lessons
In retrospect, this past year has demonstrated to me that the apprehension I felt prior to beginning university—and even throughout the year—was largely misplaced. Numerous support structures exist, ranging from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in navigating challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with instances of joy and enjoyment.
In summary, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has illustrated the significance of stepping outside my comfort zone, seeking assistance when necessary, and seizing opportunities as they arise.
