**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who used to be quite shy and introverted, venturing into the unknown was well outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with growth, obstacles, and much happiness, I find myself contemplating what I’ve gained and how far I’ve come.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you are a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern you share. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.

These friends have evolved into my second family, and all it required was venturing beyond my comfort zone and engaging in light conversation with others in similar situations. What did I take away from this experience? That first step is always worthwhile. If you’re not ready or don’t feel at ease immediately, that’s perfectly fine—numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others are available. Most crucially, I learned that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re likely to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major obstacle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you measure up.

What aided me during this time was the awareness that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re grappling with comprehension, it’s likely that others are as well. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from friends or the teaching faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most beneficial skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and show understanding toward the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our issues and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through official roles or informal conversations, getting acquainted with the staff is among the best things you can do for your own benefit. My primary lesson? Utilize the support that’s being provided—you can never receive too much help.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the anxious feelings I experienced—both leading up to starting university and throughout the year—were frequently unfounded. With the broad spectrum of support available from faculty and fellow students, I realized I was never truly isolated. I also discovered how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a voyage of self-discovery, development, and connection. If you are about to embark on your own university journey, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. Take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance—you’ll be astonished at what you can accomplish.
