**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I encountered feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted, jumping into this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, challenges, and lots of enjoyment, I can assert it was a life-changing experience. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Taking the Leap: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered initially was the task of making friends. For numerous incoming students, this ranks among the top concerns when starting university—and I was no different. On my very first day of moving into the student residence, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to go out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I’m delighted to report I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.

The pivotal moment arose when I chose to initiate small conversations with fellow students who were experiencing the same feelings as me. That straightforward gesture of reaching out enabled me to create a second family here at Imperial. My takeaway from this experience is that making the effort at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling hesitant or unsure, don’t stress—numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others are available. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re set to find individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Terrain
Another major challenge involved acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university life was quite apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second proved to be even more strenuous. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re keeping pace.

What assisted me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The essential lesson is to ask for assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Learning to seek help is arguably the most crucial skill you can acquire in your first year.

### Support from Faculty
In discussing faculty, the support system within the Materials department is remarkable. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in student success and are sympathetic to the obstacles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year, ensuring that students feel acknowledged and supported.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available to me until later in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. In the beginning, I took a leap by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with faculty members. This experience turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal responsibilities or casual interactions, getting to know your lecturers and tutors can significantly impact your experience. My key takeaway here is to leverage the resources and support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Lessons Gained
Looking back, this year has revealed that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to embarking on my university journey and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With abundant support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the pressures from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a path of self-discovery, growth, and meaningful connections. If you’re about to start a similar journey, remember that challenges serve as hidden opportunities, and there will always be a community ready to support you.
