**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the path that lay ahead. I was preparing to commence my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. For someone who had always been introverted and withdrawn, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments, I can appreciate just how much I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of entering university was the prospect of forging new friendships. For many incoming students, this is a primary concern, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes were set to commence, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These bonds have transformed into a second family for me, both within my program and throughout the university. What shifted? It all began with small actions—starting conversations and reaching out to others who shared my situation.
The biggest takeaway I discovered is that taking an initial leap of faith at the beginning of the year pays off. If you’re not ready to jump in right away, that’s perfectly fine—there are ample icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was substantial, and moving from the first term to the second felt even more demanding. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others around you appearing to flourish.
What aided me in overcoming those periods of self-doubt was realizing that everyone else is also experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s highly likely that others are too. The important thing is to seek help—whether from fellow students or faculty. Learning to request assistance is arguably the most valuable skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### Encouragement from the Materials Department
One of the highlights of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science and Engineering faculty. They genuinely desire for students to succeed and understand the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and offered numerous resources to assist us in navigating our academic and personal challenges.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had sought it out earlier. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative early on was one of the most beneficial choices I made. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members and gain valuable insights into the available support systems. Whether through official roles or casual conversations, getting acquainted with the staff is immensely advantageous. My recommendation? Utilize every resource and support network you can—we can never have too much assistance!
### Main Lessons Learned
In hindsight, this year has revealed to me that many of the anxieties I held—both prior to and during my time at university—were unfounded. With the extensive support from staff and peers, I discovered that I was never truly alone. I also learned how to manage the stress stemming from exams and deadlines while still finding moments of enjoyment and fun.
Embarking on university is a leap into uncertainty, but it also presents a chance for significant growth. If you’re about to start this adventure, embrace the challenges, lean on the support available to you, and don’t forget to savor the journey.
