**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with a mix of nervous excitement, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I readied myself to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a newcomer in my freshman year, plunging into this fresh phase of life seemed intimidating, particularly for someone like me, who had always been introverted and quiet. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I can assert that it has been a life-changing journey. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting facets of starting university was the idea of forging new friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share similar concerns. On my first day in university housing, a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships I have ever had. These bonds have evolved into a second family for me here at Imperial, all initiated by straightforward conversations and casual exchanges with peers who were just as apprehensive.
What did I take away from this experience? Firstly, it’s vital to take that initial step forward. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, trust that there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Secondly, the most important thing you can do is be authentic. With such a diverse array of students at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Addressing Academic Challenges
Adapting to the demands and academic intensity of university was yet another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level material was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more extreme. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others study and thrive. Nonetheless, one thing that aided me was recalling that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you find something challenging, it’s likely that others do as well.
The most critical lesson I gained was to seek assistance when needed. Whether from fellow students or faculty members, asking for support can significantly impact your journey. Don’t hesitate to request clarification or advice—it’s a crucial ability to hone during your first year.
### Fostering Connections with Supportive Staff
The faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and show understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open, addressing our worries and providing assistance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner. Taking on the role of a well-being representative for the year was one of the significant steps I made at the beginning of the year. This position allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway here is to make use of the resources and support accessible—you can never have too much help!
### Insights Gained
Ultimately, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to entering university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I soon recognized that I was never on my own. I have learned to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and laughter.
If I could offer one piece of advice to incoming students, it would be this: embrace the challenges ahead, take those bold steps, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. University is a period for personal growth, and with the right attitude and support, you will emerge more resilient and confident than ever.
