**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has always been introverted, jumping straight into this new phase was quite intimidating. Now, as I look back on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I faced at the outset of university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might share these feelings. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to classes, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life—friends who feel like family.
How did this shift come about? It began with taking small steps, like initiating light conversations with others who were just as new and hesitant as I was. My principal takeaway? Take that initial leap of faith early on. Even if you’re unprepared or feel uneasy at first, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others will arise. Most importantly, remain authentic. In such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter others who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic demands of university was another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university-level assignments was stark, and the shift from the first semester to the second felt even more challenging. It’s quite easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when observing others study and wondering whether you are keeping pace.
What assisted me in navigating these emotions was the realization that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was grappling with similar challenges, and if I was perplexed by something, chances were that others were too. The critical lesson here? Don’t shy away from asking for assistance. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or seeking advice from staff, requesting help can significantly impact your experience.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
Speaking of staff, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials department team is. They genuinely care about students’ success and are compassionate towards the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication and were always willing to respond to our queries.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the end of the academic year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative early helped me develop meaningful connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. Engaging with your lecturers and support staff, whether through formal or informal means, is one of the most advantageous steps you can take. My advice? Make the most of the resources and assistance available—there’s no such thing as too much support!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that many of the anxieties I had concerning university were baseless. With the abundant support from both staff and peers, I realized I was never genuinely alone. I also acquired the ability to manage stress from exams and deadlines while balancing moments of joy and enjoyment.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It’s been a path of growth, resilience, and connection, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead as I continue my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
