**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt about the future. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown was definitely outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can’t help but consider the valuable lessons I’ve gained and my journey so far.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my very first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I ended up spending the whole day in my room, too nervous to go out and introduce myself. Now, looking back, I can say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.
The pivotal moment came when I decided to venture beyond my usual boundaries and strike up conversations with others who were feeling just as lost. Through these exchanges, I discovered a second family at Imperial. What I’ve realized is that taking that first step is essential. If you’re not ready at the start, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities to meet people. Above all, authenticity is key. With such a rich diversity at Imperial, you are sure to connect with individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic demands and the elevated difficulty of university-level material was yet another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.
What helped me maneuver through this was the awareness that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, it’s likely that your peers are too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Developing the ability to ask for help is likely the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Establishing Relationships with Supportive Faculty
One of the highlights of my experience has been the remarkable support from the staff in the Materials department. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open, addressing our issues and offering direction.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of the first initiatives I took, and it proved to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which has been invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and engaging with them can significantly enrich your university life. My main takeaway? Utilize the support provided—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I experienced—both before and during university—was often unnecessary. With a wide array of support options from faculty and peers, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me to embrace challenges, reach out for help when necessary, and discover joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I continue this journey, I am thankful for the personal growth, the friendships forged, and the wisdom acquired. For anyone about to commence their own university adventure, remember: take the plunge, be yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help.
