**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and withdrawn, stepping into the unfamiliar was a daunting challenge. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a period of personal development, challenges, and many memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where am I now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered initially was forging friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is a primary worry when commencing university, and I was no exception. On my first day at the student housing, just days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life this year. These relationships have come to feel like a second family, both within my program and throughout the university. How did I get here? It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing similar feelings.
The crucial takeaway? Take a chance at the beginning of the year. Even if you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, there will be numerous chances to engage with others through ice-breaker events and social gatherings. And above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and complexity was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more significant. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and assume they have everything under control.
What enabled me to overcome these moments of self-doubt was the realization that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The best approach is to ask for assistance. This has perhaps been the most vital lesson I’ve learned during my first year: don’t hesitate to seek help from your classmates and instructors.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are fully aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and expressed understanding for our difficulties.
While I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Becoming a year well-being representative early on allowed me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual interactions, getting to know your lecturers and tutors can create a substantial impact. My suggestion? Make the most of the support systems in place—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unnecessary. With the incredible support from both staff and peers, those fears became easier to handle.
This year has shown me that I’m never truly alone, even when I have doubts. It has demonstrated how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment. Most importantly, it has been a year of development, confirming that stepping outside of your comfort zone can result in remarkable experiences and enduring friendships.
If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. But keep in mind that there’s an entire community ready to support you—and you are capable of more than you realize.
