**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my experience as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new experience felt significantly intimidating. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with personal development, trials, and many enjoyable moments, I can’t help but ponder the insights I’ve gained and how much I’ve evolved.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting components of beginning university was the apprehension of forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might relate to that feeling. I recall my first day settling into my dorm—before the term had even commenced, and I spent the entire day staying in my room, far too anxious to venture out and greet anyone.
Fast forward to the present, and I can assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become akin to a second family for me. All it required was a little small talk with others who were just as uncertain as I was.
So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is invariably worthwhile. If you don’t feel ready right away, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I realized the significance of being true to myself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to discover individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Trials
Adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the course material was another significant obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second term seemed even more daunting. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying and wondering if you’re measuring up.
What benefitted me the most was reminding myself that I wasn’t going through this alone. If I found something perplexing, it was likely that others were facing similar struggles. Seeking assistance became my most crucial asset in my first year—whether it was from fellow students or academic staff.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
Speaking of the staff, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about our success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year and are perpetually eager to assist.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the last part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and I strongly encourage taking the initiative. My largest takeaway? Never hesitate to leverage the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never receive too much help.
### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced before university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support available from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly solitary. I also learned the art of balancing exam stresses and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
Looking back, I take pride in the steps I’ve taken and the personal growth I’ve undergone. If you are on the brink of your own university adventure, remember: take that leap, seek assistance, and above all, stay true to yourself.
