**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been introverted and unassuming, venturing into the unfamiliar was not something I was used to. Reflecting on this past year, I see it as a period of transformation—rich with growth, obstacles, and a fair share of enjoyment. So, what insights has this year provided, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Relationships
One of the biggest hurdles I encountered was the process of making friends. If you are an incoming student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day settling into student housing, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire time retreating into my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself. Fast-forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with brief conversations with others who were equally anxious.
What have I gained from this experience? Taking that first step is invaluable. If you find yourself unprepared or uneasy initially, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, remain true to yourself. In such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to meet people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Demands
The academic workload and the level of difficulty were yet another considerable obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more marked. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when among high-achieving peers. However, one realization that aided me was that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are too.
The vital lesson here? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Whether it involves reaching out to peers or faculty, pursuing support is essential.
### Help from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is extraordinary. The instructors and tutors genuinely aim for student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the academic year and are consistently ready to assist.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had started sooner. Becoming a well-being representative for my year was one of the bold steps I took at the beginning of the year. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My takeaway? Fully utilize the support provided—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Upon reflection, this past year has revealed to me that the unease I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often baseless. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and fun.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been an expedition of self-discovery, filled with trials, lessons, and unforgettable moments. If you’re about to begin your own university adventure, remember to take that leap, seek help when necessary, and seize the opportunities that await.
