**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed by anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I braced myself to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As a person who has always been somewhat introverted, jumping into this new phase was quite daunting. Now, reflecting on a year of academic growth, obstacles, and remarkable experiences, I can assert that it has been a life-altering journey. So, what insights have I gathered, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was forming friendships. If you’re considering enrolling, this might be one of your major worries too. On my initial day in student housing, just days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the whole time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I’m thrilled to say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced—connections that feel like a second family.
How did this transformation occur? It began with casual conversations and relating to others who shared similar feelings. My key takeaway? Make that early move. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample icebreaker events and avenues to meet new people. And above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and ideals.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Adjusting to the demands and complexities of university-level coursework was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become daunted or question your strengths when witnessing others studying and excelling.
What aided me during these trying times was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, others likely are too. The secret is to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek support may be the most important skill you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors sincerely want their students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They maintain transparent communication with students throughout the academic year and are consistently willing to assist.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral resources available until late in the year, I wish I had sought help earlier. Taking on the responsibility of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took early on, which enabled me to form significant relationships with staff members. Whether through official positions or casual encounters, getting to know the faculty is one of the best choices you can make for yourself. My recommendation? Make use of the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to commencing university and during my time here—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive range of support available from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone. More crucially, I’ve learned how to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and relaxation.
Reflecting on my journey, I recognize how much I’ve evolved, and I eagerly anticipate what the future holds. To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: embrace the hurdles, take bold steps, and remember that support is always close by.
