**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, venturing into the unknown felt far outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich in development, challenges, and memorable moments, I can recognize just how much I’ve grown and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the university’s outset was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this is a primary concern, and I was no different. On my first day settling into my residence, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to step outside and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve made some of my closest friends. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share my passions, uplift me, and add joy to my everyday life. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small talks with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

So, what insight did I gain? I discovered that making that first move is essential. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and occasions to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned to always be authentically myself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the rigorous workload and the elevated complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and seemingly having it all sorted.

What aided me was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial skill is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Support and Connectivity

Speaking of staff, I cannot stress enough how wonderful the Materials department personnel are. They genuinely care about students’ success and are incredibly understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication, addressing our concerns and providing support.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to tap into the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to—and during—university was often unfounded. There are extensive support networks available, from staff to fellow students, to help you navigate challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that balancing the stress from exams and deadlines with joyful moments is indeed possible.

Looking back, I’m proud of my growth and eager for what the future holds. To anyone gearing up to embark on their own university adventure: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and don’t forget to savor the journey.
