**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxious excitement as I set out to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. Having always been somewhat shy and introverted, entering this new phase felt like venturing into uncharted territory. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been a transformative experience—one rich with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the thought of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share similar feelings. On my very first day in student housing, I spent hours in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who understand my journey and support me through life’s ups and downs.
What was my strategy? Taking that crucial first step. Even if you feel unprepared to jump right in, rest assured—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. My most significant takeaway? Be authentic. With such a wide-ranging community at Imperial, you are sure to find people who click with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the educational demands of university was another major hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university work was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was especially challenging. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your skills, particularly when witnessing others appearing to flourish.
What helped me manage this? Reminding myself that everyone is in this together. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely many others are too. The best advice I can offer is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek help is one of the most crucial abilities you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our worries and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support resources until later in the year, I wish I had done so sooner. Taking on the position of a wellbeing representative for my year was one of the significant steps I took early on, and it proved to be an outstanding choice. It enabled me to form connections with faculty members, which has been invaluable. My suggestion? Make the most of the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt—both before starting university and during the course of the year—was often unwarranted. With the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of joy and camaraderie.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of development, resilience, and exploration. If you’re about to begin a similar journey, understand that while the challenges may seem overwhelming, the rewards are immeasurable.
