**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed by anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been introverted and reserved, launching into this fresh chapter felt quite overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time rich with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A major challenge I encountered early in my journey was forging friendships. For numerous incoming students, this represents one of the most daunting elements of starting university — and I was no different. On my very first day at student accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve established some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my course and throughout the broader university community. All it took was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with others who shared my experience.
What have I gleaned from this encounter? First, it’s vital to take that initial leap of faith early on. If at first you don’t feel ready or at ease, that’s completely normal — there are myriad icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Second, the best advice is to simply be yourself. With such a diverse student body, you are sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another challenge I faced was adapting to the heavier workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic setting can occasionally shake your self-assurance, particularly when observing classmates diligently studying and feeling as though you’re lagging behind.
What aided me in overcoming this hurdle was the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others share that confusion. The important thing is to reach out for assistance. In my view, developing this ability to seek help is absolutely crucial in your first year. Whether it’s connecting with classmates or asking for guidance from faculty, don’t shy away from posing questions.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the subject of faculty, I cannot stress enough how fantastic the Materials department team is. They truly want students to thrive and are well aware of the difficulties we face. Throughout the year, they fostered transparent communication and displayed genuine understanding toward our challenges.
I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral resources available until late in the year, but looking back, I wish I had sought help earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Whether through formal roles or casual encounters, building relationships with your instructors and support staff is one of the smartest moves you can make for your university experience.
What’s my key takeaway here? Utilize the resources and support systems available to you. There’s no such thing as asking for too much help!
### Insights from My First Year
In retrospection, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt — both in anticipation of and during university — was often unwarranted. There are extensive support systems in place, ranging from faculty to fellow students, designed to assist you through the challenges. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone and that it is feasible to balance the pressures of academics with periods of joy and enjoyment.
This year has been a transformative journey, enriched with growth, learning, and connection. To anyone preparing to embark on their own university adventure: take that leap, confront the challenges, and don’t forget to savor the experience.
